The New Zealand Catholic Bishops ask us to mark a Day of Prayer for Refugees and Migrants on 20 June 2021. This date is celebrated as World Refugee Day around the world.
For the Catholic Church in New Zealand, a Day of Prayer for Refugees and Migrants is set aside each year on the Sunday nearest to World Refugee Day on 20 June. The day is an opportunity for parishes to pray for refugees and migrants everywhere and reflect on the challenges they face.
On the 150th anniversary of the proclamation of St Joseph as patron of the universal Church, Pope Francis declared the Year of Saint Joseph. In his apostolic letter, Patris Corde, Pope Francis regards St Joseph as ‘the special patron of all those forced to leave their native lands because of war, hatred, persecution and poverty.
