This year the Social Justice Week focus is on disability and\u00a0participation. How can we encourage more enabling\u00a0communities, affirming that everyone has a part to play in\u00a0our society?
\nDisability is not about individual impairment, but about\u00a0society. The New Zealand Disability Strategy says: \u201cDisability\u00a0is something that happens when people with impairments\u00a0face barriers in society; it is society that disables us, not our\u00a0impairments\u2026 It is something that happens when the world\u00a0we live in has been designed by people who assume that\u00a0everyone is the same.\u201d
\nWe are all valuable before God, and we all have the same desire to experience life more abundantly, as Jesus promised\u00a0us. God has called us together as one body \u2013 in fact, it is our\u00a0diverse gifts and abilities that make us the Body of Christ. As\u00a0St Paul wrote to the Corinthians, \u201cif one part suffers, every\u00a0<\/em>part suffers with it; if one part is honoured, every part rejoices\u00a0with it<\/em>\u201d\u00a0(1 Cor 12:26).<\/strong>
\nIt is the duty and responsibility of each of us to play our own\u00a0part to the fullest and remove every barrier that stands in the\u00a0way of our brothers and sisters from doing the same.<\/p>\n
