It was a great turnout and a wide range of communities in our parish were represented.<br>There was thought provoking comment and animated discussion. While there is much we can do, we also recognised that there is a lot of welcoming going on in our communities and we shared many stories of this.<br>Thank you to Mike Gourley especially for taking the time to share with us his experience, as a disabled person, of \u2018welcoming communities\u2019. Mike\u2019s sharing stimulated a lot of reflection on our facilities especially and how we engage with people with disabilities (some of which are not visible).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Below is a summary of key themes \/ideas and next steps\u2026<br><strong>Theme 1: Being welcoming and feeling welcomed<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Personal greetings \u2013 when arriving, leaving and by those sitting next to you&nbsp;<\/li><li>Hospitality after Mass \u2013 being invited; new people are approached&nbsp;<\/li><li>Being invited to be involved and to volunteer \u2013 everyone has something to contribute<\/li><li>Being asked your name \u2013 and knowing others\u2019 names. (Name tags for greeters, Eucharistic ministers, etc?)<\/li><li>Good music<\/li><li>\u201cCome as you are\u201d \u2013 be clear we welcome everyone and all diversity (encourage people to be comfortable with their self-identity)<\/li><li>Doing things together, knowing more about each other (social events, family groups, etc, outside of Mass times)<\/li><li>Involve young people (invite them to choose a role in Mass; support Lifeteen and eXaLT)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Theme 2: Being welcoming of disability and inclusion<\/strong><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Personal welcome and concern: greet the person, not just their disability.<\/li><li>Ease of access \u2013 ramps and handrails: to the church, to the altar, to toilets, to pews (spacing of benches)<\/li><li>Being asked if you need assistance<\/li><li>Good AV and sound systems \u2013 large clear print for overhead projectors with strong contrast<\/li><li>Voice projection training for presiders\/readers to speak clearly into microphones<\/li><li>Concern and awareness for invisible disabilities<\/li><li>Warm churches<\/li><li>Spare wheelchair\/walker in each church? Defibrillators?<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Theme 3: Wider ideas for enriching our communities and being even more welcoming<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Gather feedback from visitors and new parishioners \u2013 learn if they how welcome they feel and why (and why not)<\/li><li>Ensure liturgy, ministries and roster volunteers are representative of the whole community \u2013 invite more people to participate (individual invitations work)<\/li><li>Te Reo slides with English translations alongside (and slower pronunciation)<\/li><li>Bi-cultural and multi-cultural signage<\/li><li>Even more inclusive language in the liturgy<\/li><li>Grow engagement with the wider community \u2013 look out beyond our church buildings (including social justice activities)<\/li><li>Continue to establish the Home of Compassion as the \u201cjoint meeting place\u201d for our parish churches and whole of parish events<\/li><li>Grow school-church-parish links<\/li><li>\u201cMore lively\u201d liturgies<\/li><li>\u201cSpontaneous notices\u201d at the end of Mass \u2013 e.g. family news, birthdays..<\/li><li>Gender-neutral toilets<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"56\" src=\"https:\/\/wellingtonsouthcatholic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/kowhaiwhai2-1024x56.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4291\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wellingtonsouthcatholic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/kowhaiwhai2-1024x56.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/wellingtonsouthcatholic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/kowhaiwhai2-300x16.jpg 300w, https:\/\/wellingtonsouthcatholic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/kowhaiwhai2-768x42.jpg 768w, https:\/\/wellingtonsouthcatholic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/kowhaiwhai2.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Next steps<\/strong><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Individual communities to discuss opportunities to utilise some of the ideas listed above.<\/li><li>Parish Council&amp; Leadership Team to consider actions to be integrated into current pastoral plan in the New Year.<br><\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Thank you again for your support,<br>God bless<br>Stephen Neal, Chair, Pastoral Council<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Thank you to all who attended the recent Stewardship Afternoon at St Anne\u2019s.
