<\/p>\nThe sisters and\u00a0supporters\u00a0celebrated their 125th\u00a0anniversary during Mass at\u00a0St Francis\u00a0de Sales Church Island Bay on\u00a05 May at 10.30am.\u00a0Cardinal John presiding.

\u201cWe were founded by the power of the\u00a0printed word. A printed brochure inspired\u00a0our foundress Mary Theresa Ledochowska\u00a0to work against slavery. Mary Theresa\u00a0grew up in the magnificent surroundings of\u00a0Austrian nobility and was very familiar with\u00a0mountain excursions, evenings of dance,\u00a0dinner and entertainment. She had to\u00a0spend hours in the midst of drawing room\u00a0etiquette, sterile idleness, living on a surface\u00a0level. When given a pamphlet denouncing\u00a0the slave trade which was still widespread in\u00a0Africa, Mary Theresa was shocked to realise\u00a0that so many people, created in God\u2019s\u00a0image, were being treated worse than\u00a0animals. She hoped that once people knew\u00a0of the terrible realities of the slave trade\u00a0they would want to help fight against it.<\/em> The congregation was founded on 29\u00a0April 1894. Today there are sisters of 28\u00a0nationalities in 47 countries. Although our\u00a0communities are usually small, our mission\u00a0<\/em>helpers constitute a gigantic force of\u00a0women and men participating in assisting\u00a0the poor from afar. Our work is still the same\u00a0as that of our foundress: mission promotion\u00a0<\/em>and mission aid. \nHer hopes became a reality with donations\u00a0requesting that she forward the money to\u00a0the most needy missionaries. Mary Theresa\u00a0developed Echo from Africa and with her\u00a0<\/em>writer\u2019s talent and her heart full of love and\u00a0compassion for the slaves, subscriptions\u00a0became more and more numerous.<\/em><\/p>\n
