Message from Parish Leadership Team

Dear Parishioners
Following Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern’s address to the nation this afternoon, we encourage all parishioners over 70 and those who in any way feel vulnerable to please stay at home. Although our Bishops have encouraged us to keep churches open, please note that this is only for personal prayer and reflection. It is not in any way a suggestion to gather as a faith community. Physical distancing recommendations and strict hygiene practices are to be observed. If you are feeling sick, please stay at home, seek medical assistance, and tap into your family and social support networks. Please let us know how we can support you. We will get through this by staying calm, following the rules and showing compassion. Our Bishops remind us of the words of tomorrow’s Psalm: “Even though we walk in the dark valley, we fear no evil for you O God are with us giving us courage.”  (Ps 23)
God bless you
Parish Leadership Team

URGENT UPDATE

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT FROM
CARDINAL JOHN DEW RE COVID-19

Masses and public liturgies

All public Masses and liturgies in the Archdiocese are suspended from 20 March until further notice, both weekday and weekend Masses. Some churches will be open for private prayer, and social distancing should be observed if people are doing this. A dispensation from the diocesan Bishop releases Catholics from fulfilling their obligation to attend a Sunday Mass. Since public Masses are suspended in the Archdiocese until further notice, all Catholics in the Archdiocese are dispensed from the obligation to attend Sunday Mass (Canon 1248).

Catholic bishops warn proposed abortion law removes tenuous rights of unborn babies

Statement: 19 February 2020
‘Catholic bishops warn proposed abortion law removes tenuous unborn rights New Zealand’s Catholic bishops are concerned that unborn babies will lose their existing tenuous legal rights if Parliament passes the Abortion Legislation Bill in the form proposed by a select committee.
And unborn babies with a fetal disability will have even less protection than under the current law, the bishops note.’

The full text of the Catholic bishops statement can be read here.

‘The amendments fail to deal with substantive concerns raised by The Nathaniel Centre and the NZ Catholic Bishops Conference in their submission to the Select Committee.’
